At IAM, we recognize the diversity of perspectives within our membership, which spans the global political spectrum. While some things will undoubtedly change, IAM will not compromise on our commitment to being an inclusive organization. Inclusion is one of IAM’s Foundational Values and we believe every member’s voice strengthens our global network and propels us forward. If you would like your voice to be considered as an IAM But one thing is undeniable: elections have consequences. These consequences ripple through business, shaping poli- cies and influencing trends in profound ways. For the global moving industry, the outcomes of recent elections have the potential to redefine key aspects of how we operate and that is why IAM chose to feature it in this edition of the Portal. For instance, changes in immigration policies could affect workforce mobility, and anticipated mandates on emissions reporting could now be postponed or cancelled entirely. Policy changes brought on by new governments could cool the global inflation increases we have seen recently or drive prices and rates up even further. These are just a few of the pressing questions facing our industry, and IAM is committed to monitoring these developments closely. Our aim is to help members stay informed and prepared for any shifts that may arise. As always, uncertainty goes hand in hand with change. Unfortunately, it comes at a time when our industry is already in a vul- nerable place. Not only have there been big electoral shifts, but business is also down, customers are changing how they buy moving services, technology is rapidly accelerating, etc. It’s at times like this when associations like IAM prove their worth. In this business environment, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to report unpaid invoices owed to your company by other IAM (RPP) coverage is part of your IAM membership, but it is worthless if you don’t report outstanding invoices to IAM. If you take away one message from this article, let it be this: REPORT! Report them to IAM using to ensure they are eligible for compensation if a debtor company goes out of business. The IAM Issue Resolution System continues to become even more effective at facilitating the repayment of debts between members as well. This success has been amplified by program, which brings more accountability to the relationship between business partners. In fact, IAM revoked its first IAM Trusted Moving Company credential under this program in January 2025. (Bookmark so you have access to real- time updates to what is happening in the IAM Network). Decisive actions like this demonstrate the IAM Trusted Moving Company program’s effectiveness in protecting members and reinforces IAM’s commitment to strengthening the network. IAM is also sharpening its response to changes within the Department of Defense’s (DoD) military moving programs. Recently, IAM recently and emphasizing the risks of altering the current DP3 program prior to fully implement- ing the Global Household Goods Contract (GHC). I also published an editorial criticizing TRANSCOM’s cavalier approach, which threatens to create significant disruptions within our industry and undermine the customer experience for American military families. IAM will continue advocating for thoughtful, measured policies that serve both our customers and our members who make moving possible. Looking ahead, I encourage every IAM member to participate in our upcoming Industry Needs Survey, which will be dis- tributed by Scarlet Oak Consulting in early February and remain open for one month. This 15-minute survey is a critical opportunity for our 2,200 member companies to share their perspectives on how the industry is shifting and what support they need to succeed. The survey results will guide the IAM Executive Committee as we review and to meet the evolving needs of our members. As we face the opportunities and challenges of this new era, IAM is here to help you navigate the road ahead. Together, we will discover, innovate, and lead so that our industry continues to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Sharpening Our Focus BRIAN'S BEAT Brian Limperopulos IAM President Brian's BeatPortal Focus: Global Impacts How Elections Influence the Moving Industry8 PORTAL January / February 2025PORTAL January / February 2025 GLOBAL IMPACTS HOW ELECTIONS INFLUENCE THE MOVING INDUSTRY By Will Kohudic, Editor, Portal As we enter 2025, the ripple effects of a historic year of elections are reshap- ing industries worldwide. More than 70 countries held national elections in 2024, resulting in unprec- edented (or “unpresidented”?) turnover for half the world’s population, including the pivotal U.S. Presidential election. More than ever before, the global political environment is driving profound changes in the moving sector. This issue of The Portal examines how elections influence critical policies such as immigration, trade, economic reform, and environmen- tal sustainability, all of which directly impact relocation trends and operational strategies. In Washington, DC, political transitions sparked by the U.S. elections will create a surge in gov- ernment personnel relocations. Meanwhile, in India, post-election economic reforms are fueling domestic and international moves tied to industrial growth and foreign investment. Elsewhere, geopolitical changes at home and abroad are introducing uncertainty and poten- tial changes in every aspect of the moving industry. Our contributors highlight the interconnect- edness of political shifts and the global moving industry. They address nearshoring trends in the Americas, evolving trade policies, rising interest rates, and the growing influence of environmental regulations. These insights emphasize the importance of agility and innovation for industry professionals navi- gating these regulatory and demographical transformations. This theme was chosen because elections affect every aspect of the moving industry, from government and corporate relocations to the evolving expectations of environmentally-con- scious consumers. By examining these dynam- ics, we provide readers with strategic insights to remain competitive and forward-thinking in a rapidly-evolving market. 9Next >
