Whether it's navigating unpredictable schedules, coordinating complex logistics across borders, or responding to last-minute changes with professional- ism and care, movers are built to adapt, resolve issues and deliver. It is that spirit of resilience that continues to carry our industry forward, even as the pace of change accelerates and expectations rise. This issue of The Portal is centered on The New Transferee: a customer who expects more transparency, faster service, digital access, and increasingly, a sustainabil- ity-minded experience. These expectations are reshaping our industry. And true to form, our members are stepping up. Whether through investments in new technology, improved com- munications, or reinvented service models, movers are reimagining how they serve custom- ers while staying true to the values that define this industry. But, as we’ve seen recently, meeting these modern expectations is not always simple. The Department of Defense’s decision to terminate HomeSafe Alliance as the prime contractor under the Global Household Goods Contract on June 18 reflects the growing tension between the desire for a seamless, "Amazon-like" experience and the complex, highly coordinated reality of executing a household goods move. As Dan Bradley notes in his article on Peak Season’s rocky start (p. 56), delivering quality outcomes at scale requires more than good intentions or automation. It demands deep expertise, strong partnerships, and the human touch that has long defined this industry. IAM members deliver that value every single day. That mindset was front and center earlier this month when IAM participated in the National Council of Moving Associations (NCMA), a longstanding but informal gathering of American trade associations, joined by the Canadian Association of Movers. These conversations are not just about shared challenges, but about shared solutions. By learning from each other and building trusted relationships, we all gain new tools to better serve our members. That same collaborative spirit is also behind an exciting development on the sustainability front. The Coalition for Greener Mobility, originally an informal alliance of relocation asso- ciations, has now formalized as the Coalition of Associations in Global Mobility. This new structure enables us to engage more deeply with both associations and forward-thinking companies ready to support greener mobility. As expectations around emissions, carbon reporting, and environmental leadership continue to grow, we now have a stronger platform to push for practical, industry-led solutions. It also provides us with a stronger cross-indus- try approach to meet the challenges of the future with a unified voice. The challenges we face today are real, but so are the ingenuity, grit, and commitment of our global membership. IAM will continue to bring people together, advocate for our industry, and ensure we stay ahead of the curve. Let’s keep moving forward. Together. Brian's Beat Brian Limperopulos IAM President Meeting the Moment, TogetherEach year for our July/August issue, we invite the IAM-YP group to choose a topic for the feature story that resonates throughout the industry. This issue’s feature, The New Transferee, is no exception. We’ve all experienced a shift over the last few years in clients’ needs and expectations, and the trend is only increasing. You may ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?’ The 22 authors who contributed to this article have not simply been letting the days go by. They’ve been assessing today’s market conditions and listening to their clients to stay ahead of the curve. A few of the trends they address include customers’ increased demand for flexibility; decreasing shipment volumes; a shift toward personalized, high-touch reloca- tion support; the importance of sustainability and social responsibility; a hunger for technol- ogy-enabled services; and heightened expecta- tions of cost transparency and control. As you read, you will see that some contribu- tions address points that seem similar on the surface, but that’s as deep as the resemblance goes. Each of our authors brings a unique per- spective to the challenges we face in moving today’s clients. You’ll undoubtedly find expe- riences similar to your own below, predic- tions of things to come in the near future and, most importantly, strategies that will help you adjust your operations and company culture to make the most of every move and build lasting, vibrant client and customer relationships.
