I want to use this column to share what IAM itself has been doing on this front, because we believe the Association should lead by example. AI adoption at IAM is part of how we are executing our strategic plan. Our mission is to advance the professionalism and operational excellence of our members, and that means using every tool available to make information more accessible, education more effective, and the Association more responsive to the industry it serves. Members have likely already encountered some of this work firsthand. We have deployed chatbot func- tions on our websites to help members find answers faster, whether they are looking for program details, event information, or educational resources. We also built the DP3 Research Assistant, an AI-powered tool available through IAM Learning that provides general guidance based on publicly available DP3 resources. If you work on military moves, you know how time-consuming research can be. The Research Assistant helps members find the right answers faster. It is not an official PPA or Service-specific source, and does not replace DP3 regulations, business rules, or official guidance, but it puts useful information within reach more quickly than ever before. Behind the scenes, IAM staff are also using AI tools in our daily work to operate more efficiently and deliver more value to members. Ray daSilva does an excellent job expanding on the steps IAM has taken to build these tools on page 30. I encourage you to read through what we are doing and the intentionality behind it. But here is the part I want to emphasize: we did not adopt these tools without thinking carefully about risk. IAM handles sensitive member data, and we take that responsibility seriously. Before expanding our use of AI, we assessed the potential risks this technology poses to the data we secure. That process led us to develop a responsible use of AI policy, which we have introduced to the IAM Ethics Council as a potential resource we can make available to members. It is still in development but the intent is to give our members a practical starting point as they work through their own decisions about how to use AI productively and responsibly. We know many of you are grappling with these same questions, and we want to help. This topic could not be more timely. Our industry’s largest customer is making it clear that data security is no longer optional. The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is the Department of Defense’s framework for protecting Federal Contract Information and Controlled Unclassified Information across its entire supply chain. If you touch DP3 shipment data, you are part of that chain, and you must comply. The standards are complex, the timelines are real, and the consequences of inaction are serious. IAM has invested heavily in helping members prepare. The Technology Committee and CMMC Working Group have built out the IAM CMMC Resource Center, delivered education through the IAM Tech Talks, fielded member questions, and submitted industry concerns directly to the Joint Task Force. I want to thank every volunteer who contributed to these efforts. It has made a real difference for members navigating these requirements. Dan Bradley and I heard this message reinforced directly when we met with the Personal Property Activity at Scott Air Force Base on April 2. The DoD expects its partners to meet these standards, and they are watch- ing. I encourage you to read Dan’s writeup on that visit on page 28. AI can make us faster, smarter, and more efficient. But it also demands that we be more disciplined about how we handle data and more intentional about the policies we put in place. IAM is committed to getting both sides of that equation right, and to helping our members do the same. A Smart Tool for Responsible Users Brian's Beat Brian Limperopulos IAM PresidentThe moving and relocation industry has never been for the faint of heart. Razor-thin margins, high seasonal vol- atility, labor shortages, and an increas- ingly demanding customer base make running a moving company a complex operational challenge. For years, this industry has leaned on experience, hustle, and hard-won relationships to stay competitive. That foundation remains essential, but it’s no longer enough. The companies pulling ahead today are the ones pairing that expertise with an increasingly powerful tool: artificial intelligence. The numbers are hard to ignore: early AI adopters in the industry are reporting measurable gains in estimat- ing accuracy, fuel efficiency, crew utilization, and claims reduction, all directly tied to AI-enabled platforms and pro- cesses. Companies are using AI to reduce administrative grind, draft and polish standard communications, perform data analysis and pattern recognition, make unrelated systems talk to each other, enhance information security, streamline customer engagement, and more. The single common strength uniting these use-cases is increased competitive advantage, regardless of the size of your operation. AI tools are no longer the exclusive domain of deep-pocketed tech giants; they’ve become accessible, scal- able, and increasingly affordable. They also come with limita- tions and caveats, which our authors don’t hesitate to point out. In the stories ahead, our authors break down how AI is being deployed across multiple disciplines, with real-world examples from companies who are already seeing results. The question is no longer whether AI has a place in your busi- ness. The question is how quickly you can put it to work.
