Like every year, I came out of the IAM Annual Meeting & Expo completely energized by spending time with our members and reinvigorated to pursue IAM’s Mission of striving be the global champion for the moving industry by advancing the professionalism and operational excellence of our members. This mission is more critical than ever as our members face a challenging environment char- acterized by significant changes in how moves are awarded, reduced volumes, smaller ship- ments, and yet more requirements with which to comply. In times like these, your industry associations like IAM need to step up and demonstrate how we are helping your business. That was the focus of my speech at the General Session at the IAM Annual Meeting & Expo—How are we striving to help you and the broader industry. It starts with which is a set of guidelines written by IAM Members for IAM Members to help us understand the difference between “right” and “wrong,” and in applying those understanding to their dealings with clients and other IAM members. This Code is not just a piece of paper—it embodies the ethical responsibilities of our industry, and is the set of basic values to which our members commit. Promote the Code of Ethics to your partners and your customers—share it proudly and show them what your company is committing to as a member of IAM. Agreeing to abide by a Code is an important step that many associations ask of their members, but that is not enough. We must all go one step further to show all moving industry stakeholders—especially our customers—a positive view of how our industry is building a better future. will tell that story for us. By bringing real-time accountability to the IAM Code of Ethics through the we are pre- senting a truly innovative tool to our members and moving customers. Now is the time to join the movement that includes almost 300 IAM members. Become an IAM Trusted Moving Company today to show your partners and your clients how your company is willing to honor its commitments and be judged against that standard in real time. Another way in which IAM is striving to help your business is by connecting your companies with clients. This year's con- ference featured several sessions with government agencies, military services, RMCs, and other multinational organi- zations. There is significant change happening throughout the industry as big clients continue to assess and reconsider the best way to procure moving services. If you don’t attend these sessions, you are missing out on valuable intelligence about how to position yourself for the future. The biggest session IAM hosted concerned the U.S. military and its rollout of the Global Household Goods Contract. This contract is the most significant change to the moving industry in quite some time, with the world’s biggest moving customer deciding to change how they manage 300,000 moves per year. We heard from the contract award winner, HomeSafe Alliance, about the current timeline, and got their responses to questions posed by their fellow IAM members ahead of the Annual Meeting & Expo. Following that presentation, IAM members shared their thoughts and opinions on the current state of the rollout and the support they are looking for from the Association. Following the conference, IAM was pleased to have an opportunity to connect with the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) in a wide-ranging conversation that touched on industry concerns regarding pay rates in the GHC, the com- pliance challenges of the U.S. Service Contract Act (SCA), whether there would be enough quality capacity committed to the GHC to service the full quantity of 300,000 moves per year, amongst other GHC-related topics. In closing, I want to thank each of you for your continued support and engagement with IAM. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient association that is well-equipped to face the challenges and opportunities ahead. I encourage you to stay involved, share your insights, and take advantage of the many resources and programs IAM offers. Let us continue to work together to advance our mission and elevate the moving industry. The IAM Annual Meeting & Expo: Building a Vibrant, Resilient Community BRIAN'S BEAT Brian Limperopulos IAM President Brian's BeatPortal Focus: IAM 62nd Annual Meeting & Expo In ReviewIAM held its 62nd Annual Meeting & Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 14–17. This year, our con- ference theme was All In. We chose All In because it’s a term for gam- bling with a winning hand, but it also represents the time, effort and energy that attendees (and IAM staff!) invest in preparing for and traveling to the Annual Meeting. The best part of going All In at the Annual Meeting, of course, is that it’s not a gamble; everyone who attends comes away a winner, with new and renewed business connections, new indus- try knowledge, and new ideas to grow their compa- nies with a fresh vision for the coming year. Inside and outside the Expo Hall, there was never a dull moment. The event showcased innovations that we’ve developed in response to attendee feedback from previous events. These included new “turnkey” booths in the Expo Hall that increased efficiency and reduced costs, house-shaped meeting pods located outside the Expo Hall, and making spacious ball- rooms available as meeting spaces. The improved visibility and flow kept these meeting spaces full of energy as members held their individual meetings. We assembled a stellar lineup of speakers for our corporate- and U.S. government-focused learn- ing sessions, who spoke on topics ranging from By Will Kohudic, Editor, Portal THE 2024 IAM ANNUAL MEETING & EXPO— ALL IN 8 PORTAL November / December 2024 IAM’s volunteer leaders bring their energy to the Annual Meeting!what customers want, to the rise of AI in the industry, to what’s happening in the GHC arena. Panelists included leaders from RMCs, financial organizations, government agencies including the Department of State and Department of Defense, and officers of the HomeSafe Alliance. Attendees came away with new strategies to minimize claims, insights into the near future of the Defense Personal Property Program, and a look forward to the future of U.S. government moving. In addition to the speaker panels, we also expanded on the concept of hosting small-group discussions on critical and emerging topics. The conversations among attendees were lively and productive as they shared ideas and experiences on subjects like tech- nology and leadership in the industry. Each group shared their wisdom with the room at the end, leaving participants with valuable takeaways includ- ing the vital importance of frequency and trans- parency in communication to build trust, and the critical role of strategic business planning in navigat- ing changes and supporting long-term stability and success. The Annual Meeting offers more than just ‘some- thing for everyone’; it concentrates a wealth of opportunities for face-to-face meetings, building friendships and business connections, updates on industry trends and IAM’s vision for the coming year, and social events. To all of our exhibitors, spon- sors, honorees, and attendees who went All In with us in Las Vegas, we thank you profoundly for your contributions.
